Put some pizazz in your ponytail
August 21, 2012
If you’re like me, perpetually running late even on your best days, you’ve probably found yourself relying on a good old fashioned ponytail to get you out the door a time or two.
But while the ponytail is definitely the rockstar of super quick, super easy hairstyles, it can sometimes get a little boring, wearing the same simple pony with the same simple elastic tie day after day. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways to spice up a basic ponytail so it’s a little more polished or eye-catching – and without adding much time to your hair styling routine.
A simple elastic hair tie is the easiest way to secure a ponytail, but you can give your pony a cool, natural look by hiding the elastic with a piece of your hair. Pull your hair back as you normally would for a ponytail, but leave a single strand on one side loose as you secure your hair with the elastic. The strand can be as thick or thin as you like, so play around to see how you like it best. Take the loose strand and wrap it around the elastic as the base of your pony, tucking the end under the elastic so it looks as if your ponytail is held in place by nothing but your hair. Make sure to spray the base of your pony with a firm hold hairspray like Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hair Spray to keep your elastic hidden all day.
For an eye-catching ponytail, try a little twist at the base. Use an elastic that matches your hair color to tie your hair in a low pony – but once it’s secured, slide the elastic slightly down your hair and away from the back of your head. Use your fingers to carefully separate the hair above the elastic, and pull the end of your pony back through the center. This will create a cool twisted or rolled effect on either side of your pony. This do looks so chic and elegant that no one will know you only spent a couple of minutes on your hair!
Instead of the usual ponytail at the back of your head, switch things up and move your pony to the side. But don’t go with a high side pony, or you’ll wind up looking like a reject from a bad ‘80s music video. Instead, keep your pony nice and low by securing it with an elastic behind one of your ears to give you a pretty, side-swept effect. For the ultimate flirty look, use a curling iron to create loose waves in your pony that are sure to turn a few heads.
If sleek and sexy is your style, go for a slicked back pony. This style works best on straight hair, so you may want to use a straightener before you create your ponytail for the sleekest look. Use a smoothing gel like Pantene Pro-V Classic Style Total Control Hair Gel at the top of your hair near the scalp, so you can smooth the hair down as you pull it back into a ponytail. The key to this look is making sure that there isn’t a single hair out of place, so take the time to really slick the hair down and brush out the pony to keep it polished and chic.
If you don’t want to spend even an extra minute on your ponytail, amp up your look with some fun accessories. Pair a low pony with a satin headband that feature a bow for a cute, dressed up look. Instead of a simple elastic, use a jeweled clip or a piece of satin ribbon to secure your pony. For a flirty, summer look, tuck a flowered pin into the base of your ponytail to give you the perfect ‘do for date night or an outdoor party.
